Steel Stamp Basics
Q1What is a steel stamp? Where can it be used, and why is it durable?
A steel stamp (also called a steel type or hand stamp) is a hand-held marking tool: one end is a raised character; strike the other end with a hammer and it drives letters, numbers or a logo into the surface of the workpiece, leaving a permanent indentation.
It works on steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass and cast iron, as well as leather and wood.
Because the mark is pressed into the material rather than printed on the surface, it will not peel or fade like a label or ink, and stays legible even after high heat, wear or outdoor exposure.
Q2Which industries and applications typically use steel stamps?
The most common uses are marking part numbers, serial numbers, lot numbers, dates and brand logos.
Typical industries include machinery and metalworking, automotive parts, hardware tools, aerospace, mold making and jewelry, as well as product traceability marking.
Wherever a permanent mark is needed on metal, leather or wood, a steel stamp is up to the job.
Q3Why choose steel stamping? What are the advantages?
Steel stamping is durable, low-cost and portable: no electricity, no consumables, one strike per character — and a physical indentation is the most durable mark of all.
For marking part numbers, lot numbers or a logo on metal quickly and economically, it is the most practical choice.
Alignment & Consistency (Patented Stamp Box)
Q1Why does a whole row of characters come out crooked or uneven in depth?
When you stamp loose characters one by one, there is no fixed alignment reference, so errors accumulate and the line drifts further off; we recommend sticking a strip of masking tape along a baseline on the workpiece and aligning the bottom edge of the stamp to the tape edge.
Paired with the patented multi-function box for horizontal positioning, the impression comes out straighter and more even in depth.
Q2My hand is not very steady, or my staff are not experienced -- can we still stamp neatly?
Yes.
The patented box hands the hardest part -- alignment -- to the box, simplifying the job to three actions: pick a character, position, strike. Beginners pick it up quickly.
Quality varies less between operators too, which suits situations where the work is handed to inexperienced or temporary staff.
Q3An ordinary clamp can also hold a stamp -- what makes the Young Cycle patented box different?
An ordinary clamp usually holds only one stamp at a time and needs repeated loosening and tightening; changing characters is slow and alignment still depends on the operator.

Q4I have to keep swapping characters to stamp a whole row -- is that not slow?

Q5I already have loose characters -- do I still need the box?

Operating Safety
Q1Will I hit my hand stamping? How do I avoid injury?
The most dangerous action in stamping is holding the stamp with one hand while swinging the hammer with the other — your fingers are right next to the impact point, and one slip hits them; an unsecured stamp can also bounce or slip when struck.

Q2Do I need protective gear to stamp?
We recommend safety goggles and gloves.
Young Cycle stamp ends are tempered and will not shatter, but striking still produces workpiece debris, and goggles keep chips out of your eyes; secure the workpiece in a vise or clamp rather than holding it down by hand -- that is the best safety habit.
Process & Damage
Q1Should I stamp before or after heat treatment?
Always stamp 'before' heat treatment, while the workpiece is still soft.
This is the most important rule: after quenching, the workpiece is hard and brittle -- stamping then not only chips and flattens the character head, it can crack the workpiece itself.
The correct order is 'form, then stamp, then heat treat'.
Q2Why did the character head chip after only a few strikes?
The most common reason is stamping on an already heat-treated, hardened workpiece; the stamp cannot out-harden the quenched part, so the stamp is what breaks first.
The fix is not a harder stamp going head-to-head, but returning to the correct order -- stamp while the workpiece is still soft.
Young Cycle character heads are properly heat-treated with ample hardness and toughness, but the same premise applies: use them on soft material.
Q3How do I keep the workpiece from being dented or cracked?
Besides stamping in the soft, pre-heat-treatment state, also note: back the workpiece on a solid, hard, flat surface and test your force on scrap first; for thin and brittle materials (cast iron, hard plastic) use a smaller impact, starting light and building up gradually to avoid one over-hard strike.
Q4What is the blue tint (heat color) on the stamp end? Is it a defect?
It is not a defect -- it is the temper color left by tempering (heat treatment).
We deliberately keep this mark as an identifier that the end has been correctly tempered.
After tempering, the stamp end is lower in hardness (HRC 38-46), so it does not go head-to-head with the hammer when struck, preventing the end from shattering and sending chips flying (there have been cases abroad of un-tempered stamp ends breaking apart).
So this blue mark represents safety and quality, not a flaw.
What Materials Can Be Stamped
Q1Can it stamp stainless steel?
Yes. Stainless steels such as 304 and 316 stamp fine in their un-hardened state.
Stainless is harder than ordinary steel, so use a bit more force and aim to finish in one strike.
Hardenable stainless (420, 440) should likewise be stamped before heat treatment.
Q2Can it stamp aluminum, copper, brass or cast iron?
Yes, but adjust the force for each. Aluminum, copper, brass: easy to stamp with clear marks -- among the best-suited materials for steel stamping.
Be careful not to use too much force, which can stamp too deep or dent thin pieces; test lightly first to gauge depth. Cast iron: can be stamped, but it is brittle, and too much force easily cracks or chips at the mark.
Always back the workpiece solidly and build up from a light force.
Q3Can it stamp plastic or acrylic?
Plastic depends on the material.
Hard plastics and acrylic are brittle, and a stamp strike may crack or chip the edge; we recommend laser or hot stamping instead.
Q4Can it stamp leather or wood?
Yes, a steel stamp can impress marks into leather and wood.
Leather and wood are much softer than metal, so use less force than on metal; test on a corner or scrap first to find a force that is clear but does not punch through; leather may be lightly dampened before stamping, and for wood, follow the grain to avoid splitting.
Q5The workpiece is already plated or painted -- can I still stamp it?
Stamping will break the plating or paint and expose the base material, and can even become a starting point for rust.
As a rule, stamp 'before' surface treatments such as plating and painting -- the same logic as stamping before heat treatment: schedule any step that damages the surface ahead of the surface finish.
How to Choose (Selection & Specs)
Q1I do not know what character size to buy -- how do I choose?
Character height depends on the size of the workpiece and the width of the markable surface -- a small face cannot fit large characters, and a large face makes small characters hard to read.

Q2What is the difference between the precision YC series and the economy GL/GN?
Both stamp characters; the difference is process and shank: the YC series has a fuller process and a thicker shank, suited to long-term, frequent, quality-critical use; the economy GL/GN skip end-tempering and edge chamfering for a lower price, suited to limited budgets or occasional use.
Q3I need Chinese, special symbols or a logo not in the catalog -- what do I do?
The standard catalog covers the Latin alphabet, numbers and common symbols; Chinese, special symbols and logos are custom, and Young Cycle can produce them from your artwork at the factory.
Provide the content to be stamped and the workpiece conditions and we can assess it.
Q4What is the difference between the German and the English font?
We offer both an English and a German (DIN 1451) font, both highly legible.
The German font is narrower and taller than the English face — choose by preference or the standard your parts must meet.
Q5What are reverse (mirror) characters for?
Reverse characters (such as YC-605/606/617/618) come out mirrored, for applications that will later be transferred, offset or used as a mold -- the finished part reads correctly once reversed.
If you are stamping directly on the workpiece and want it to read normally, do not choose reverse characters.
Q6What is the difference between dot and solid-line characters, and when do I use each?
Dot characters (such as YC-609/609B) are made of a series of dots; the impact is spread out and the stress on the workpiece is low, suiting thinner pieces or where you do not want a deep mark; solid-line characters have continuous strokes and high legibility, suiting general marking.
Q7What is an interchangeable stamp set, and who is it for?
An interchangeable stamp (such as YC-610B) lets you arrange individual characters into a holder and stamp a whole row at once, suited to users whose content changes but who still want to stamp a full row in one go.
How to Stamp Well (Technique)
Q1How heavy should the hammer be? Why does the same force give very different depths on different materials?
It depends on character height and material: the larger the character and the harder the material, the heavier the hammer needed; the key is force enough to finish in one strike -- better a heavy enough hammer in one blow than a light hammer with repeated tapping that causes ghosting.
And because hardness differs -- soft metals (aluminum, copper) go deep with light force, hard materials (stainless) need more -- you should re-test on scrap every time you change material to find the right force, rather than reusing the feel from the previous material.
Q2What hammer should I use? Is an ordinary steel hammer okay?
An ordinary steel hammer is fine, and you may choose a brass or steel hammer to suit the workpiece material.
Test on scrap first to confirm force and depth before stamping the workpiece you want to mark.
Q3Should I mark a line first before stamping?
We recommend sticking a strip of masking tape on the workpiece, or drawing a baseline with a pen, and aligning to it as you stamp -- neatness improves immediately.
Q4Does the workpiece have to be clamped? Can I not just hold it?
It must be secured.
Clamp the workpiece firmly in a vise or fixture so it will not bounce or shift when struck -- both neater and safer.
Holding it by hand is the main cause of slips, injuries and crooked marks.
Q5If there is ghosting or the mark is not clear enough, can I strike again?
Try not to.
A second strike is hard to align to the original spot and easily causes ghosting, making it blurrier.
The correct way is one character, one strike, hammer dropping vertically, done in one go. If the force is insufficient, use a heavier hammer.
Q6Stamping thin sheets under 3mm -- how do I avoid denting, warping or distortion?
The keys are backing and force. Backing must be hard and flat: use a flat, hard steel anvil or thick steel plate so the whole sheet is supported evenly.
A too-soft backing dents the workpiece and the characters will not go deep. Keep the whole face flat and press the edges: let the thin sheet sit fully against the backing, and clamp the perimeter if needed to prevent warping. Test the force first: test on scrap of the same material and thickness to find a force that is clear but does not visibly distort, then stamp the real part. Consider dot characters: dot characters with a more spread-out impact (such as YC-609) reduce bulging on the back. For very thin pieces under 1mm, some visible distortion on the back is usually unavoidable -- that is a property of the material.
Q7For round or narrow pieces like tubes, curved surfaces, screws and small rods, why is the middle clear but the sides blurry? How do I stamp them?
A flat character face on a curved surface touches only in the middle while the sides lift, so the middle is deep, the sides shallow, and the characters blur. Tubes and curved surfaces: use a roll-marking method, or a curved fixture matching the workpiece radius so the character face sits as flush as possible.
Screws, nuts and small rods: choose a smaller character height, clamp the workpiece straight and firm, and strike vertically in one go. Marking surface too small: switch to dot marking done in stages. Give us the workpiece diameter and marking-surface width and Young Cycle can suggest a suitable character height and marking method.
Care & Storage
Q1How do I care for them so they last? What if a stamp rusts or the character grooves get dirty?
Moisture and skipping care after stamping are the main causes of rust; getting into the habit of post-use care greatly extends their life. Cleaning: wipe off debris after use and clear the character grooves with a wire brush or air gun. Rust prevention: apply a thin film of anti-rust oil. Storage: keep in a dry, sealed place.
Avoid letting the character heads knock into each other or scatter -- storing them in the Young Cycle patented box is ideal, less prone to moisture and impact than loose on a bench.
Q2Can I still use a character head once it is worn?
A steel stamp is a consumable; the character face wears naturally with long use, which is normal -- replacement is recommended.

Q1Do your steel stamps have patents and a brand?

Q3After long use, can I still buy the same ones?
Yes.
The advantage of choosing Young Cycle's standard models is long-term supply and stable specifications, so when you reorder later, the font and character height match what you had before.
Q4I do not know which model to buy -- how do I ask you?
Tell Young Cycle three things for a selection recommendation: (1) the workpiece material and whether it is heat-treated, (2) the marking-surface size and the character height you want, (3) whether the content is fixed or will change.
The factory will match you to the right model, character height and grade accordingly.
Quality & How to Judge a Steel Stamp
Q1I did everything right, so why are the characters still blurry with chipped strokes?
When your technique is correct and the force is enough but the characters are still blurry with chipped strokes, the most common cause is that the steel stamp's own quality is not good enough.
A poor-quality stamp is under-forged, so the character tips are not sharp enough and the stroke starts and ends are rounded -- the die is missing detail, so the mark comes out incomplete.
This cannot be fixed by technique -- what the die does not have, no amount of stamping can print.

Q2Why are the characters from a cheap stamp so different from Young Cycle's?
The gap is in the forging process.
To cut cost, low-price stamps skip precision forging and proper heat treatment of the character head, leaving rounded tips and rough strokes — blurry, incomplete marks.

Q3How can I tell whether a stamp in hand is good quality?
The most direct way is to inspect the character head with a magnifier.
On a good stamp the stroke tips are sharp, the corners crisp, and the ends finish cleanly; on a poor one the tips are rounded, the edges rough, and the stroke junctions blur together.
You can also test-stamp one character on scrap -- whether the shape is complete and the detail clear tells you at a glance.
Q4The characters got blurry after a while -- is that poor quality or normal wear?
Distinguish two cases: if it stamped incompletely from the start and the stroke tips never came out, that is insufficient forging quality in the die itself; if the marks were clear and complete at first and only gradually faded and blurred after a period of use, that is normal wear.
A stamp's character head is a forged three-dimensional structure; once worn it cannot be re-ground and needs replacing with a new one.
